What is a Gravatar?

If you have ever visited a website that allows comments to be made on articles; Yahoo is an example that does, you would have noticed by the side of some peoples names and comment an image that is not standard appears. This is called a gravatar; it’s an image that will be displayed on any website that displays avatars, appearing beside your name, based on the email address you use when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, chat rooms etc. standing out from the blank default that is displayed for people without one.

Steps to creating an Avatar

It’s not hard, anyone can do it, you just need to be a little prepared first, then follow the 3 easy steps.

Before you sign up, have these things ready.

  1. A picture of yourself you wish to use.
  2. A description, bio about you.

When making the picture, make it square and 225×225 pixels in dimension. I suggest making it more of a head shot because it will be reduced down on many sites; as small as 50px by 50px on some, making it hard if not impossible to see you.

Now that you have your picture ready, get writting a brief description about who you are and what you do. Don’t be shy, the idea is to let people who have; nor probably will, never meet you, get a better understanding of what you’re about.

Ok, let’s get started!

The 3 Easy Steps to Create an Avatar are:

  1. Sign up to get your very own gravatar by visiting the Gravatar website. You will be asked to sign up with an email address that will be used to associate your picture with later. An email confirmation is required, so be ready to click on the activation link straight away.

  2. You will then be asked to create an account with a user name and password; nothing dificult yet!

  3. Follow the instructions adding your image you saved on your computer (knowing where you saved it helps too) and your description about your self.

Congratulations! You have created an avatar that will be recognised all over the world, personalising comments you make on websites.

If you do run into any problems, let me know by leaving a comment and I will be happy to help you out.
