What is Pinterest?

Find out what Pinterest is and how to set up a pinterest account

Pinterest is a ‘Virtual Pin board of Images’.

Pinterest allows you to share your images, and those that you find on the web with everyone. Instead of ‘like’ you ‘pin-it’ to your Pinterest pin board page.

Pinterest has over 20 million registered users, using pin boards to plan events such as weddings, sharing favourite recipes and holiday destinations or other places of interest. The Pinterest website is not about getting friends, it’s about sharing what you like with other people with similar interests to you.

Cleverly though, Pinterest allows you to easily share your pins with your Facebook account, by default, if you signed up to Pinterest with your Facebook login details. You can login with your Twitter login details too. Just like Twitter and Facebook you can ‘tag’ your Pinterest friends in the description or comments of each pin using ‘@’ followed by the person’s name; the person tagged will be notified and the tag is linked to their profile.

Pinterest is new but already one of the top 10 social networking sites in the world, coming in at number nine. When setting up your Pinterest account, and adding pins you will have to make sure you are allowing ‘cookies’ in your browser.

How to set up a Pinterest Account.

Creating a Pinterest account is very easy with these 5 steps.

  1. Visit and decide whether you wish to connect with your Facebook or Twitter account. For most people that will be Facebook and has the advantage of sharing your pins to your wall much simpler. If you don’t want to do that, you can sign up using any email address that you have. You just choose a username and password, enter your first and last name, gender then click create account.
Note: As with all social networking sites there are terms and conditions to signing up. You should read these by clicking on the link, so you understand what rights you are giving away; ownership of the images you pin to a board for example.
  2. Once you have signed in, you are prompted to add some images that interest you from the selection you see and these will start your pin board going. Don’t worry, these can be deleted later and you can add new ones.
  3. Your ‘home page’ will now be displayed, showing the images that you clicked on previously. To add more, click on the ‘categories’ link to select a topic that interests you.
  4. Each of these categories contain millions of images from users boards. If you click on an image, then the follow button, images from that board will then be displayed on your home page.
  5. To ‘follow’ or ‘repin’:
    • Follow: When you follow someone, you see each new pin that they add to any of their boards; even new ones they create, that may not interest you.
    • Repin: When you repin, you save that image to your board, your home page will not be updated with with any other pins that user adds in the future.

Basically you can decide whether you want to see all of a persons pins on a subject, automatically, or manually add the ones that really interest you.

How to create a New Pinterest Board.

A new board can be created on any topic you like; great websites, best TV programs, top movies, and you can add as many pins to the board you wish too. Anyone who follows one of your boards, also sees the content you added to your other boards.
For our example on setting up a new Pinterest board I will choose the category ‘Technology’.

Follow these 5 steps to create a new Pinterest board:

  1. You can either click the ‘Add’ button, then select ‘create board’, or you can click on your name at the top of the site and then ‘Boards’ from the drop-down-menu.
  2. Give your new board a descriptive name, such as ‘reliable monitors’.
  3. Next select the category you wish your board to be in; in our example we would choose ‘Technology’.
Note: It’s a good idea, and will make using Pinterest a lot easier, if you stick to one interest, i.e. technology. Your name is displayed as the creator of the new board.
  4. If you like, and you are already following another user, you can allow them to also add pins to your board by entering their name to the ‘Who can pin?’ section.
  5. Lastly you can add a description to your board, edit the title, even change the category should you desire. When you are finished make sure you click ‘Save Settings’.

How to Use the ‘Pin-it’ Button.

Many websites give you the option to ‘pin-it’ along with other social networking options. Simply click on the pin-it button to add an image and description to one of your boards. Remember you must allow ‘cookies’ in your browser settings.
You can also add the Pin It Button to your ‘Bookmarks bar’ making it easy to add images as you browse the web by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your Pinterest Account and click on the about tab at the top of the page. From the drop down menu, select the ‘Pin It Button’.
  2. There are different methods, depending on which browser you are using, I will cover Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
    • Internet Explorer: If you are using Internet Explorer, right click your mouse and select ‘add to favourites’ and click on Favourites bar. You can display your favourites bar by clicking on the tools icon or tools > Toolbars > Favourites Bar.
    • Google Chrome: When using Chrome, you will need to reveal the Bookmark bar by clicking on the menu button at the top right hand side of your screen and mouse over Bookmarks. From the menu, you then select ‘show Bookmarks Bar’, then drag the Pin It Button onto the bar.
  3. You are now set up to use the Pin It Button whenever you find something you want to share on your Pinterest boards. When you click the Pin It Button on a web page, the images on that page are displayed for you to select from. You simply click on the image to ‘Pin It’.

Only you can decide whether to make Pinterest on of your social networking sites to join. It is easy to use and share on Facebook and Twitter, but it’s limited in Australia because of the limited following it has. However, linking it to Facebook does have the advantage of brightening up your wall and can be used for business if you have products you wish to display with prices.

I don’t imagine that Pinterest will become one of the top 3 social networking sites, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have those positions sown up, but it could be used if you can get a small group of people interested, and can be useful if you all have Android phones by downloading the App from Google Play Store; it’s Free!
